The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) have found themselves in a heated controversy, as spurned investor Damon Hanlin speaks out against the organization. Hanlin, who had been actively funding and supporting the Central Coast Mariners as a potential buyer, claims he was denied the opportunity to become the official owner of the A-League team. This sudden twist has left Hanlin and the club in a state of uncertainty and disappointment.
According to Hanlin, he had been encouraged by the outgoing chairman of the Central Coast Mariners to step in as the team's financial stabiliser. He even executed a binding contract of sale with the club's owner, Mike Charlesworth, in October, demonstrating his commitment and financial capability. Hanlin's efforts were evident as he injected over $2 million into the team, covering player wages, staff entitlements, operational costs, and match-day expenses. He also brought in former Sydney Olympic coach Labinot Haliti to lead the football department.
However, the APL's sudden decision to strip Charlesworth of his licence and take control of the club has left Hanlin feeling betrayed. He argues that the APL failed to provide the necessary determination and support, despite having a willing and capable buyer already in place.
