Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert are betting on George Russell to make a serious challenge for the title. While the usual suspects like McLaren and Verstappen are the favorites, Russell is seen as the one to watch. He was the only other driver to win a race in 2025, and rumors suggest Mercedes has a powerful engine for 2026.
Herbert, speaking on the 'Stay on Track' podcast, shared his thoughts: "I’m probably going to go Mercedes... George has done a brilliant job for them. I’m sure they’re going to be at the sharp end fighting for race wins and potentially the championship. I tell you what, I’m going to go George."
Hill agreed, stating, "I would say the dark horse here is George Russell, who performed brilliantly, consistently all year in a car that was not a regular winner. Yeah, I think they’re in a good place."
But that's not all!
Both Hill and Herbert believe Aston Martin could be the 'surprise' team of 2026. With the regulation changes expected to bring the field closer, a team like Aston Martin, with Adrian Newey and Honda's expertise, could make a significant leap.
Herbert pointed out Aston Martin's potential, stating, "Aston is the only one that, with the brand that it’s got, but actually, its performance, it’s underperformed in many respects from the name that it’s got. But now it’s that time of Adrian and his team to produce the goods.”
Hill added that Aston Martin has the resources, and Herbert noted they've had time to prepare, with their wind tunnel operational.
