Shaun Dwyer, a veteran trainer, is back in the spotlight with his horse Dragonne Rouge, a potential star in the making. Dwyer's journey to this point began over two decades ago when his horse, Regimental Gal, a Group 1 winner, catapulted him into the national racing scene. Now, he's hoping to recreate those glory days with Dragonne Rouge in the prestigious $3 million Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast.
Regimental Gal, purchased for a modest $16,500, went on to become a champion, earning over $1.61 million in prize money with seven wins from 17 starts. Her victories included the Magic Millions Classic in 2003, the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington, and the Group 1 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley in 2004. Named after a French champagne, Dragonne Rouge, a daughter of Dracarys, was acquired for $50,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sales. Despite being an outsider, she has already proven her worth, returning over $271,000 in prize money to her owners.
Dwyer, who spent 13 years in Victoria riding the success wave of Regimental Gal, is confident in Dragonne Rouge's abilities. He believes she has the potential to excel in Black-Type races. Dragonne Rouge will be ridden by Michael Rodd, who was also aboard Regimental Gal for most of her victories, except for her Group 1 wins when Steven King took over due to a suspension. Dwyer's optimism is further bolstered by Dragonne Rouge's recent performance, finishing eighth in her first-up race at Eagle Farm, despite drawing the outside barrier.
Dwyer's strategy for Dragonne Rouge's upcoming race includes hoping for rain, as she thrives in wet conditions. He reflects on her progress, noting that she won three of her four starts in her first campaign, including the Listed Galaway Gal at Eagle Farm in April. Despite her success, Dwyer admits he underestimated her potential, never expecting her to win a Listed race so early in her career. He remains confident, citing her exceptional training and favorable draw in barrier six, making her a strong contender for the Magic Millions Guineas.
