She enters Mike’s mind, reveals her plan to end her life to protect her loved ones, and says an emotional farewell. As she stands at the portal to the Upside Down, Hopper’s C-4 detonates, seemingly erasing her and the Upside Down itself. And this is the part most people miss... 18 months later, Mike hints that Kali might have created an illusion of Eleven, allowing the real El to escape and find peace. This ambiguous ending has sparked endless debates and even conspiracy theories about a secret episode with the “real” ending.
But the alternate ending? It was far more straightforward. Hopper was originally in on El’s plan to fake her death, sharing a poignant, wordless moment reminiscent of Lost in Translation. Eleven would have said goodbye to everyone in a happy memory, leaving no doubt about her survival.
