Imagine a small town suddenly thrust into the limelight, all thanks to a film that captures the essence of one of the world's greatest playwrights. This is the captivating story of how "Hamnet," directed by Chloé Zhao and featuring stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, is expected to create a significant buzz at the Oscars even before its official release. Based on Maggie O'Farrell's acclaimed 2020 novel, the film offers a fictionalized glimpse into the life of William Shakespeare, his wife Agnes (better known as Anne Hathaway), and their family dynamics.
With the film now out in UK theaters, anticipation is high that the so-called "Hollywood effect" will invigorate tourism in the filming locations, particularly in Stratford-upon-Avon and the nearby village of Weobley. While Stratford is famously known as Shakespeare’s birthplace, much of the movie was shot about 60 miles (96.5 km) away in Weobley, Herefordshire. Can the allure of Hollywood elevate attention towards the West Midlands?
Richard Paterson, the Chief Operating Officer at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, believes it certainly can. "This is a tremendous opportunity for the town; the benefits could be enormous. Although we know the film wasn't shot in Stratford, it highlights the significance of Anne Hathaway's cottage," he remarked.
"Hamnet reimagines the families, landscapes, and influences of home, which are central themes in Shakespeare's works. If I were a member of the public, I would definitely want to visit the place where it all began!"

Paterson notes that Shakespeare drew inspiration from the Warwickshire landscape, a sentiment echoed by O'Farrell during her visits. He anticipates a significant boost in tourism following the film's release, predicting a potential increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent in foot traffic.
He emphasized how crucial this exposure is for keeping Shakespeare’s legacy vibrant. "What’s remarkable about the film and the novel is their ability to connect Shakespeare’s themes with contemporary audiences. The impact of any such recreations will enhance understanding of his works, both regionally and globally."
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust manages five historic homes associated with the playwright, including his birthplace, Anne Hathaway's cottage, and the site where he spent his final days. This means that visitors to Stratford can literally walk down the same streets that Shakespeare and his family traversed centuries ago.
The 'Hamnet Herefordshire Effect'
In Herefordshire, Nick Mason, the county councillor for Weobley, shared his excitement: "The once-sleepy village of Weobley has truly come alive… it's like a slice of Hollywood has landed in our midst." He highlighted how this film serves as invaluable advertising that financial investments could never replicate.
Although some alterations were made for filming—such as obscuring modern signs and covering roads in straw—the village still retains much of its historical charm from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. With its classic black-and-white buildings and picturesque landscapes, Weobley is described as "bucolic" and "Shakespearean" by Visit Herefordshire, providing visitors with an authentic experience that aligns closely with the film’s setting.
Jo Hilditch, chair of Visit Herefordshire, noted the immediate influx of tourists drawn by the film, with local history groups encountering visitors as early as Boxing Day. "The whole Hollywood phenomenon surrounding 'Hamnet' is set to benefit our tourism sector immensely. We are capitalizing on this excitement through various initiatives, including Hamnet-themed trails, falconry experiences, and foraging tours."
One of the highlighted attractions is a walking trail that begins in Weobley, leading visitors through the scenic areas featured in the film, eventually arriving in Pembridge, another village renowned for its stunning timber-framed houses, located approximately two hours away on foot. There’s also a dedicated exhibition at the local library and museum that showcases the filming process, enhancing the connection between the film and the community.
Mason emphasized the importance of tourism in Herefordshire, stating, "Even a slight increase in visitors can profoundly affect our ability to provide services for residents. Everyone appreciates a village with a welcoming pub, cozy café, and good restaurants. The more tourism we attract, the better these establishments will thrive, ensuring the sustainability of our community. We’re collaborating with partners to promote the numerous experiences available in Herefordshire and encourage people to visit us."
