Bold claim: scientists have unveiled the Milky Way’s most detailed view of its chaotic core, shedding new light on a region that has long defied easy understanding. But here’s where it gets controversial: even with this extraordinary image, many mysteries about our galaxy’s heart remain, and interpretations about how stars form in such extreme environs are still debated.

A multinational team of astronomers has produced the clearest image to date of the Milky Way’s turbulent center. The image, created with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, covers about 650 light-years around the galaxy’s central supermassive black hole, according to a statement from The Australian National University (ANU) issued on Thursday.

The researchers describe the region as densely packed with gas and dust clouds that are largely invisible in ordinary light, calling it a zone of extremes now laid bare in stunning detail.

The findings, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, will help scientists explore how stars form and evolve within the most intense portion of our galaxy, right beside the central black hole. The study highlights an unprecedented view of the cold gas—the raw material for star creation—within the Milky Way’s Central Molecular Zone.

In the Milky Way’s outer regions, star formation follows well-established patterns, but the Galactic Center is far more extreme. Researchers aim to understand how its energetic processes influence the birth of new stars and whether existing theories still apply under such harsh conditions.

“A defining feature of all star-forming clouds is their highly turbulent, chaotic flows of gas and dust,” said ANU Professor Christoph Federrath.

“Near the Galactic Center, this turbulence reaches extreme levels, weaving a dense, tangled network of filaments that ultimately collapse to form new stars,” added Federrath, who leads an ANU group studying this turbulence and its driving forces—one of the biggest open questions in astrophysics.
